Some potentially very big news for the UK energy sector has been emerging over the last day or so – SSE (controller of electricity suppliers Southern Electric, Swalec and Scottish Hydro Electric) is interested in bidding for the electricity networks business of EDF, a deal which could be worth over £4bn.
The French owned EDF is selling these assests to free up revenue for investment in a new generation of Nuclear Power stations that a planned throughout the UK.
However, OFGEM is unlikely to approve this scale of deal so SSE is looking to partner with another supplier (Canada’s Borealis looks likely).
This comes off the back of SSE announcing profits of £410.5m, a 35.7% increase on 2008.

These are unique times for the world economy. The trickle down effects of the credit crunch are only just beginning to bite. With this in mind we thought that it would be useful to gauge public opinion on where energy costs rank in priority level for households.
Now that all the major UK energy companies have reduced their prices for the first quarter of this year, we would like to get a guage of readership opinion for the remainder of the year. What are your plans for your home energy this year? – is it likely that you will stay with your current supplier? or are you thinking of moving onto a better deal?
The current economic situation is obviously having a bearing on the domestic situation on a number of levels, obviously energy bills are one of the most important expenditures – would you sacrifice other services (ie broadband, cable tv) be sacrificed in order to pay for energy bills?
Thanks for filling in our poll, the results should be interesting.

Green Energy Boom
Over the next 8 years low carbon jobs will create 410,126 new jobs, the prime minister says that to boost the environment and help the country out of the current recession this is a must if we are to meet previous targets of reducing 60% of Co2 by the year 2050.
When current research was analyzed it shows that there will be around 1.25 million people working in the environmental sector by 2018.
With the recent drive around the world to reduce our carbon footprint the big countries are starting to see that they won t be immune from any future climate changes so are now living up to realism that they also must start putting measures in place or we will all face the consequences, with America now on board the we need to get the like so the world’s largest polluters on board and then we can all look forward to a happier greener environment and maybe even enjoy cheap electricity prices as the newer technologies allow us to produce energy cheaper than ever.

Yes, its that exciting time of year again – the uSwitch gas and electricity suppliers survey results have been announced. This year uSwitch questioned 5,465 UK energy customers at the end of September – and found 41% of customers are unsatisfied with the “big six” energy suppliers compared with 33% in October last year. This rise can mainly be attributed to the signifcant rise in gas and electricity bills over the past few months. There is no excuse for poor customer service at any time.
Scottish and Southern Energy topped the best supplier survey for the fifth consecutive year. Here are the results:
- Scottish and Southern Energy
- EDF
- Scottish Power
- E.ON
- British Gas
- Npower

As if in reponse to our previous post for action, Prime Minister Gordon Brown this week unveiled £910m deal with some of the the biggest energy providers in order to tackle the huge increases in energy costs. It appears that the Government has began to take the energy efficiency message on board, and is implementing for a mass awareness campaign targeting those who are struggling the most to pay their energy bills. Coupled with this campaign are practical measures designed to help the most vulnerable in society. Amongst the measures that are outlined are:
- Free cavity wall and loft insulation for pensioners and poor households
- 50% off cost of insulation for all households
- Freeze on this year’s bills for half a million poor consumers
- Partial reversal of cut to warm front programme giving free central heating to poorest pensioners
- Cold weather payments to go up from £8.50 a week to £25 a week for pensioners, disabled people and unemployed families with children under five – if temperatures drop below zero for seven consecutive days
This is all a greatly encouraging, and we are enthusiastic at the attempt to get the energy efficiency message across. It is interesting to see the government and the energy companies addressing the issue. Hopefully, this will alleviate the billing pain being felt by many and increase the green energy momentum that has been lost. There are a great number of people who will benefit greatly from this scheme. Government officials are going to be going to the streets in an attempt to get the energy efficiency message across directly – a bold move.
We cannot help feel however that any positive effects achieved by this initial implementation are likely to be offset by the millions who will miss out. Like all these schemes and proposals, there will be those who are not ‘poor’ enough to receive support or ‘rich’ enough to implement the measures themselves. Surely, those caught in this bracket are going to prioritise. In the face of increasing food, clothing and petrol costs, is increasing the energy effieciency of a home likely to be priority?

Electricity Provider Offers Fixed Prices on Green Energy
Energy provider, Southern Electric offers fixed prices and online discounts on green energy tariffs.
The current price rises in the uk energy market are leaving everyone wondering, how much will my energy costs be next month? Some of the UK’s largest energy providers announced this week that they will be putting there price up by a minimum of 19% from July 31st 2008. The latest price increase is due to a whole sale price increase of 80% in the energy market. One option to avoid these is to move your supplier, or tariff, and sign up for a fixed term fixed price energy solution.
The best way to try to try beat these, energy price hikes is to look for providers offering fixed price energy.
UK gas and electricity provider Southern Electric is one of the companies offering a fixed rate on energy packages in 2008. The price fixed packages are being offered across all their electrical packages including dual fuel and environmentally friendly energy packages. Southern Electric guarantee on their Price Fix 2008 tariff that their prices will not rise until November 2008 – no matter the market places circumstances. On top of the fixed rates, Southern Electric is offering some of the cheapest energy in the market place. Not only will your energy be fixed price you also have the choice to go green and help the environment at the same time as shaving money off of your energy bills.
You will also save more on your energy bill if you buy your energy online.
